Matt is a teacher and cellist based in West London who has had a very varied career crossing as many musical boundaries as possible. From premiering a John Tavener work as part of the BBC Proms season to performing on the G stage at Glastonbury festival to London Jazz Festival at The Barbican, he has worked with a broad range of artists and composers across the musical spectrum. He has been teaching for 17 years students of various ages in schools and also runs two local area youth training string orchestras. Most of Matt's teaching experience is one to one lessons but he also has experience of class teaching and group lessons as well as experience conducting workshops and orchestral coaching. Performance career highlights include co-writing and performing a re-scoring of the classic 1957 film Mother India with DJ Tigerstyle in venues including Sydney Opera House, Prospect Park in NYC, The Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and Esplanade Park in Singapore ('We think the cinematic experience of the summer has to be Mother India 21st Century Remix', The Telegraph, 'A powerful and moving glimpse of a challenging, unwieldy masterpiece', The Guardian), and performing cello on TV dramas that include Channel 4's Humans for composer Sarah Warne, Sky's The Five for composer Mike Jennings and BBC's Doctor Who for composer Segun Akinola. I currently work as a professional musician, performing/recording violin and piano for various ensembles and different styles on a regular basis including various musicals and operas, such as lead violinist for UK premier of Little Women the Musical, the premier of The Clockmaker's Daughter at The Landor, The Ace of Clubs, Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hansel & Gretal. I have performed as leader of 2nd violin for the Orion Orchestra and leader of the Huddersfield Philharmonic as well as working with artists including Broadcast 2000, Josh Groban, Ed Sheeran and Rick Wakeman. As well as my performance experience, I have previously worked as a piano, violin and cello teacher at a number of music academies and schools, as well as instrumental teaching, I have also worked as in-house piano accompanist for instrumental exams, choir and orchestral/ensemble rehearsals and school shows/concerts. I also work as musical director and music facilitator for Trinity Theatre and run community singing sessions in Tunbridge Wells and currently run music & baby sensory sessions for ages 0-5 years where as well as singing to the children and their carers I would also give an instrumental demonstration.

Classical Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Cello
For the past 25 years, I have been teaching cello, guitar, music theory, composition, and working as a performer, arranger, studio music producer, and soundtrack composer. I have a Masters in Music Composition by Louisiana State University School of Music, as well as a Post-Baccalaureate in Music Composition for Cinema and TV, and a Bachelor in Cello Performance by the Conservatorio Brasileiro de Musica. I was a cellist in the Brazilian National Symphony Orchestra for 18 years, and I was the first Brazilian to perform concerts and workshops in the New Directions Cello Festival, demonstrating the cello as rhythmic and harmonic instrument in musical styles as Maracatú, Baião and Samba Canção. I believe that students from diverse backgrounds can equally learn the traditional subjects of music study, as music theory, music history, composition, and instrument performance. My aim is broaden the musical universe of the students, by exposing them to styles and genres outside their usual experience. I try to introduce them to the creative process in various forms of art, and as well as to the technology that they can utilize to aid in their process. Additionally to instrument performance, I teach them to record and produce their music using computers, tablets or cell phones. My ultimate goal is to help students to develop an understanding of music as an artistic language accessible to all. To help in this sense, I incorporate class topics such as literature, history, sociology, and pop culture, in order to show their interactions with music study.
